Old Italian Farts

My wife has been taking the bus to the city, for her English class, for quite some time now.

She has been telling me how old Italian farts, dressed in leather and driving expensive German cars, keep stopping, on an almost daily basis, to offer her a ride.

One may ask me at this point: "but what is wrong with being nice?" Well, what is wrong becomes quite apparent when one considers that they never stop to offer rides to white ladies that are also alone and waiting for the bus. The same racist mentality that is heavily predisposed to make certain assumptions about the black male is also predisposed to make certain analogous assumptions about the black female.

Lica (my wife) has been seriously harassed by this very common type of typically elder Italian "gentleman" at least twice. Once, while jogging just 1 Km away from our house and the other time at the bus stop, right outside the church of our little village, at about 10am in the morning. In the second case she almost called me using her mobile (I was at work) as the guy would not leave her alone (he kept pressing her to accept his offer of a ride).

I can't help but fantasize about what I would do if I was there. Oh, the pleasure...

I really have appreciate you

I really have appreciate you posting these stories. Over the past two years i've grown in love with the italian culture, music, food and guys. And as a teenager i was quite oblivious to these problems that you mentioned and i'm glad you did because you have opened my eyes. I just want to know though, should i still seek my dream of finding me an italian husband and being a part of the culture and world or should i stop because it's to risky. And the people who harass your wife, have they ever tired physically hurting her....i'm afraid of that happening if i go there to do study abroad my junior year of college. I as well am black and greatly love italian people. My last question is are there a lot of italians like you out there...in italy, or is it in the states where you find italian men like you:)

tsk, tsk, tsk

Italians... got to lov'em...

the ugly truth

I'm originally from Rome...well...you don't need to go to the north of Italy to find racists and you don't need to be black to be discriminated...
My partner is English of Indian ancestry and I have just come back from Rome. It was meant to be a holiday but it was like a nightmare. I could observe people behaving disrespectfully towards us as if we were criminals.
Many Italian guys looked at me with extreme surprise and disapproval.
My mother solicitor even refused to shake his hand! Can you believe that?
I moved many years ago to London as I was not happy with the country. Today I just can say that ignorant people are everywhere, and although Italians are generally lovely people, they tend to generalize and discriminate. I am glad to live in London. We certainly face LESS discrimination!
